Domenico's journey begins in his hometown's band. In 2017 he joins the Euphonium and Tuba class at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, graduating with top marks for his Bachelor's degree in 2020 and with 110/110 cum laude for his Master's degree in 2022.

During his studies he takes part in numerous masterclasses with some of the most important euphonium players internationally โ€” among others Matteo Caramaschi, Luciano De Luca, Steven Mead, Bastien Baumet and Mauro Martins โ€” and still collaborates with Luciano De Luca's Italian Euphonium Academy.

From 2021 to 2025 he was principal Baritone of the Italian Brass Band, with which he also performs as a soloist under conductors Filippo Cangiamila and Giuseppe Saggio. In May 2022 he is selected for the European Youth Brass Band at the 44th European Brass Band Championship in Birmingham, conducted by Mยฐ Florient Didier; that same August he records Mahler's Seventh Symphony with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano conducted by Claus Peter Flor, as tenorhorn soloist.

Since 2 October 2023 he has been part of the Italian Army Band, performing in various Italian and international theatres. In March 2025 he performs at the Spring Music Festival on Jeju Island, South Korea, and that same year places third in the Euphonium competition organised by AETYB in Spain. He performs regularly as a soloist with the Italian Army Band and with other major musical institutions across Italy.

A few words on my Jeju competition win
"Beyond the personal satisfaction of having been the first Italian euphonium player to reach this milestone, there is a deeper satisfaction, as a euphonium player: proof that the Italian euphonium movement โ€” the one I was born and raised in โ€” works, and works very well. I'm confident that in the coming years there will be more and more room for the new generations of Italian euphonium players, especially at an international level, and I hope to be a point of reference along the way."

Ostrakon Duo

Ostrakon Duo โ€” Domenico Cima and Alessandro Scalone

Two different instruments speaking the same language

We are two colleagues who, united by the wish to do something different, decided to take on this particular musical path together.

The name Ostrakon comes from the small pottery shards used in ancient Athens to ostracise people. The reference is deliberate: saxophone and euphonium are two instruments often "ostracised" from the great classical music stages โ€” a condition we chose to turn into our strength.

Project

Two Musicians in Search of an Authorโ–พ

Ostrakon Duo is a chamber ensemble formed by saxophone and euphonium. In its own particular way, the proposed repertoire seeks to offer audiences well-known music and unpublished pieces with an unusual sound, inviting saxophonists and euphonium players to draw inspiration from the transcriptions and explore new horizons. The title "Two Instruments in Search of an Author" expresses the need to find a place where the union of sax and euphonium can give its best, turning every concert into an open-air workshop in which performing becomes, more than a display of skill, a desire to explore โ€” and in which listening becomes, more than judgment, an active part of the project's growth.
